2024 Australian Deaf Games kick off in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie

The 2024 Australia and Pacific Deaf Games officially commences today in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. This event promises to be a spectacular showcase of talent, determination, and unity within the Deaf community across the region. The Games welcome over 1000 athletes and supporters from across Australia and the Pacific for the 10-day event.

Vice President Kathryn Armfield says that the Board are excited to show recognition of the unique and diverse abilities of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. “In collaboration with Lake Macquarie City and the City of Newcastle, the hosting of this event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our language, culture and heritage. The Australian Deaf Games will show that fair play, respect, and friendship are enduring qualities of the Australian Deaf Community,” said Kathryn.

“We are proud to create an inaugural award as part of our Games – a ‘Community Spirit’ award for an individual who has shown passion, encouragement, support and leadership during the Games. This individual could be a volunteer, leader, sports person or someone involved in the 2024 Games. We have named this award after Leonie Jackson who we sadly lost in 2021 and was at that time Chair of the 2022 ADG Organising Committee.”
